Scleral lenses offer several additional benefits:
- Enhanced Comfort: The larger diameter and vaulted design eliminate contact with the cornea, resulting in exceptional comfort even for wearers with dry eyes or sensitive corneas.
- Improved Eye Health: The constant tear reservoir created by scleral lenses promotes healthy tear production and protects the cornea from irritants like dust and allergens.

Specialty Contact Lenses
Scleral lenses are specialty gas-permeable contact lenses that can improve vision and comfort for people affected by dry eye disease and conditions that affect the cornea. They are larger in diameter and rest directly on the white part of the eye, known as the sclera.
Scleral lenses are filled with a fluid reservoir of non-preserved saline that helps hydrate the eye while creating a smooth optical surface that can provide sharp vision and help eliminate glare.
You may be a candidate for scleral contact lenses if:
- You have an irregularly shaped cornea due to keratoconus, eye surgery, or other conditions.
- Your current contact lenses are uncomfortable and move around on your eye due to high astigmatism.
- You have dry eyes.
Scleral lenses are always custom-made to fit the unique shape of each individual’s eye and often require a greater amount of time to fit than standard contact lenses. Dr. Gerlach and Dr. Dues perform scleral contact lens fittings using the corneal-scleral topographer, sMap3D.

More About Scleral Lenses
Scleral lenses can help some people see more clearly and compensate for an irregular cornea shape by creating a smooth optical surface. These contact lenses are also filled with a reservoir of non-preserved saline fluid that can hydrate the eye.
Scleral lenses are also more stable than many other contact lenses. For many people, blurry vision or discomfort with traditional contact lenses can put a damper on active lifestyles. Activities like sports, hiking, or even spending time outdoors can become frustrating and challenging when contacts slip. That’s where scleral lenses can make a big difference.
Find Out if Scleral Lenses are Right for You
